MYSQL founder seeks new software licensing model

Published by:

MySQL comes with open-source licenses, developers have their fair share of choices (GPL, BSD, MIT, Apache, etc.), all of them with their own pros and cons. The same goes for commercial licenses. MySQL founder Michael “Monty” Widenius and his co-founder David Axmark, however, came up with a different model a few years ago: the Business Source License (BSL).

This new license offers an reciprocal to the closed-source and open-core licenses that many startups choose for their software, and, for the first time, Widenius’s new company,MariaDB, is now using it  for one of its products.

In some ways, the BSL is similar to a freemium model for software licensing. As Widenius explained to me, the BSL allows developers to set a limit for how many servers/CPUs/etc. their software can run on in production. Usage above that incurs a licensing fee.

That sounds like a pretty standard commercial license, but the twist here is that all of the source code is available at all times and the BSL license has an expiration date. After a set amount of time (3 years), the license expires and converts to an open-source license like the GPL or any other license the developer chooses.

“This can create a totally new ecosystem,” Widenius told me. “And even if you don’t get open source at once, we will create many more open source applications in the future.” Those are strong words; given his experience in the open-source world, it’s worth taking a closer look at how and why he and Axmark came up with the BSL.

This can create a totally new ecosystem. And even if you don’t get open source at once, we will create many more open source applications in the future.

— Monty Widenius

Widenius has quite a bit of experience with licenses and, to a large degree, he made his prediction because of the licensing choice he made for MySQL. “For some products like MySQL, GPL is actually the perfect license because MySQL is something companies want to integrate into their own products,” he explained. To integrate a GPL-licensed product into your own product, you’d have to open source your software, too. For those users, MySQL AB, the company Widenius and Axmark founded, offered a commercial license.

At the time they sold MySQL AB to Sun in 2008, 70 percent of the company’s income came from licenses. “That was the reason that MySQL had a very large valuation,” Widenius said. “We were a product company and people had to pay for it in certain situations.”

Widenius actually wanted to use a variation of the BSL earlier, “but back then, the management team wasn’t as foresight as our current one, so they decided to go with closed source.” Then, a few years ago, he noticed that a lot of startups were coming to his Open Ocean venture capital firm and they wanted to do open source for end-user products. For those companies, the dual-license model that worked so well for MySQL wasn’t going to work, because those users weren’t going to embed the software into their own products and hence had no reason to pay for a license.

What most companies that want to do open source do in that case is try to build their business on offering services around these open-source tools. Widenius does not believe in this model. “This works for companies that support a project — people are giving support for Ubuntu and make money off that,” he said. “But the companies that don’t have licenses, they can almost never make a product.” Why? Because if you get a 10 percent margin off a good support person, you need 10 support people to pay for a developer. In his view, this model doesn’t scale.

So at MariaDB, the team decided to now license the recent version of its MaxScale database proxy  under the BSL.

As far as Widenius is aware, two or three other companies have already used the license, too, but he believes many others are sitting on the edges waiting for a huge company to make the move. The team is also working on documents that will give developers a framework for moving their software to the BSL.

Developers who want to take the BSL for a new project only need to fill in four lines: the name of the product, the restrictions that set the limits for when users will have to pay, the change data for when the license converts to an open-source license and which license it converts to.

Because you end up moving the license dates up with every update, developers will have an bonus to keep their software up-to-date and something new. But if they don’t — or if the user is happy to use an existed product — then the new software license will apply once the change data arrives. This also means that when a developer goes out of business, the software will become open source after the change date and the community can pick up the work.

“Lots of people will criticize this for the wrong reasons,” Widenius told me. “But I think this is a chance to change the future of open source for the better by producing more open source — even if there’s a little bit of time delay.”

WhatsApp rival hike rises $175M lead by Tencent at $1.48B asset

Mark Zuckerberg Facebook may have a new India problem.

WhatsApp’s India rival competitor Hike has raised $175 million in funding at a valuation of about $1.4 billion in a Series D round led by China’s Tencent and Foxconn, making it the latest tech “unicorn” in the country. Hike was launch by Kavin Bharti Mittal, the descendant of Bharti Enterprises, which also owns India’s largest telecom service provider, Bharti Airtel.

Tencent’s interest in the service doesn’t come as a big surprise. Hike demands to have over 100 million registered users in the country, which makes it the closest competitor to WhatsApp. The investment gives Tencent an instant beachhead in the Indian market. WhatsApp has over 100 million monthly active users in India, which is also one of its biggest markets.

Tencent’s WeChat is a greatly popular messaging client in China with over 700 million monthly active users and a billion registered accounts as of earlier this year, but its market share remains limited outside the nation’s boundaries. The company also pwns QQ  messenger which boasts of more than 600 million active IM (instant messaging) accounts.

Hike serves as a platform for news, games, and shopping coupons on its applications in addition to providing text messaging and voice calling services. The app also binds several features tailored for the domestic audience. For example, a Hike user can send a free text message to people who are not on the app yet, a feature that is popular in India due to poor Internet perforation

Hike Messenger’s existing investors Tiger Global. Bharti and SoftBank also took part in the round.

The most fair decision took by Niantic for pokemon go users

Pokémon Go users, beware: Niantic is starting to get serious about cracking down on cheaters.

The company is starting to permanently banned users who cheat either by spoofing their location or by using third-party software to access the game “in an unauthorized manner.”

First spotted by Redditors in the Pokémon Go developer subreddit, Niantic quietly updated their FAQ page to address the issue of banned accounts. While Niantic has banned users before, the new update suggests the company is starting to increase  its punishment of cheaters.

Among this tactics that can get you permanently banned are “misrepresent your location, using emulators, modified or unofficial software and/or accessing Pokémon GO clients or backends in an unauthorized manner including through the use of third party software.” In other words, creating or using just about any third-party Pokémon Go app is enough to earn you a ban. That said, it appears Niantic is targeting the inventors of third-party software more than those who use the tools — at least for now.

The company does offer a form for banned users to accuse the decision, if they believe a mistake has been made, though it’s not clear how these cases are handled.

Niantic previously updated its app to address the undulating of third-party Pokémon-tracking apps and services that sprung up in the wake of the app’s achievement. Though that update blocked apps like ‘Pokévision’, enterprising players have found other more ways to cheat the game, like spoofing their GPS location — a technique that also breaks Pokémon Go’s terms of service.

Though skillful members of the Pokémon Go developer community will likely continue to try to stay one step ahead of Niantic, the company has made it clear it’s committed to weeding out cheating in the game.

“We will continue to work with all of you to improve better the quality of the gameplay, including ongoing optimization and fine tuning of our anti-cheat system,” the company says.

The First 7.0 Android Nougat phone by LG

Published by:

Samsung’s releasing a new and upgraded version Galaxy Note 7 later this month, the new iPhones are coming next month and now LG’s announced it’ll also reveal a new phone in early September 6,2016.

The LG V20, which the company poorly announced — but didn’t show — early last week, will debut in San Francisco on Sept. 6.

The invite  doesn’t revelation anything juicy. We’ve got a “Play More” title and “The another story begins.”

The first part could be advert to LG’s “Friends” modules, which headlined the company’s G5. But it seems unlikely the V20 will also be a modular phone, bizarre things have happened. It could also just be teasing the phone’s beefed up entertainment features.

The another part is a little more mystified. On the overside, the V20 is, of course, the second version of the V10, but it could also be instructing at a second screen or second selfie camera, two things that made the V10 different from other phones.

LG’s G5 has two rear cameras. I wouldn’t bet against that appearing on the V20. I liked the two-camera system a lot when I reviewed the phone.

The lunatic part of the announcement date might be the fact it could come one day before Apple reveals its new iPhones.

Evan Blass tweeted in twitter that he has confirmed before they are are available of the new iPhones will begin on Sept. 9 with deliveries on Sept. 12.

Apple could announce them on Sept. 7, as Daring Fireball’s John Gruber postulate.

Not to de-emphasize the V20 and what it could bring — it will be the first Android phone to ship with Android 7.0 Nougat, after all — but announcing a new product right when new iPhones are rolled out is practically suicide.

All the best LG!

Tesla and SolarCity assent to $2.6 billion merger deal

Elon Reeve Musk is a South African-born Canadian-American business magnate, engineer and inventor. He is accelerating his plans to invent again Tesla, making good on Monday his promise to combine Tesla and SolarCity, two companies where he currently serves as Chairman of the Board.

Electric car manufacturer Tesla announced its intention to bribe SolarCity for $2.6 billion in stock in a blog post a little more than a month after it initially to suggest the transaction.

Combining these two companies is actually part of Musk’s larger magnificent plan for Tesla, which includes creating a broad portfolio of Tesla vehicles that range from low-volume/high-cost to low-cost/high-volume and building a company that can handle both the generation and storage of energy.

Bringing Tesla and SolarCity together will, at least at the beginning, allow Musk, who launched Tesla and also serves as its CEO, to combine his two clean energy initiatives: The Tesla Powerwall, a wall-mounted home battery, and the solar panel building and installation business that is SolarCity.

Elon Musk explained his reasoning last month in his Master Plan Part Deux:

That they are separate at all, despite similar origins and pursuit of the same overarching goal of sustainable energy, is largely an accident of history. Now that Tesla is ready to scale Powerwall and SolarCity is ready to provide highly differentiated solar, the time has come to bring them together.

The deal was confirmed by the company boards and is expected to save, according to Tesla, the combined company $150M in “cost synergies.” It should also lead to one-stop shopping for Tesla’s energy products and a single smartphone app to control and monitor their products.

Before anyone pops a cork on this deal, though, Tesla and SolarCity still need regulatory approval and SolarCity is open to shop for a better deal for the next 45 days. Considering that Musk is the head of a corporate of both companies and his cousins managing the SolarCity, it seems unlikely that the solar energy company will land with anyone else.

Surprisingly on Instagram stories

Published by:

The fierce competition between Facebook and Snapchat just got real.

The Facebook-owned photos app just introduced a new feature called ‘Instagram Stories’ and yes — it’s a lot like Snapchat’s feature of the same identity.

Instagram Stories, which is beginning to deploy to users now, allow users to create temporary “slideshows” separate from their main processed, which vanished after 24 hours. Like Snapchat, you can annotate your images with doodles, text and snake emoji and keep tabs on who is viewing your Story.

Stories live in a bar at the top of your home processed or feed. Like the photos and videos that appear in your feed, Stories are algorithmically ranked, though not by the same algorithm that to set the order of your feed. Instead, they are ranked based on relationship — people you are closer to should, in theory, be closer to the front of the line of people.

To plan the Stories themselves, though, is delicately different than Snapchat. Tapping right will advance you to the next image or video in a story while tapping left will take you to the previous one and swiping left will skip to the next Story in your feed.

And with Snapchat, you can check who is looking at your Story. The default settings allow anyone who follows you to be able to see your Story, but you can choose to hide Stories from specific users. Additionally, if you have a public account, anyone who views your profile will be easily able to view your current Story by tapping on your profile image.

One interesting difference between Snapchat and Instagram’s version of the features is that Instagram only allows you to share photos you’ve previously taken if they were shot within the last 24 hours. Snapchat added the ability to share old photos via a new feature called Memories

in a recent update, though users can see if a photo was shot outside of the app.

Small scale differences not with standing, it’s difficult to ignore just how common Instagram’s Stories are to Snapchat’s. Instagram’s official line on the similarities between the two apps, by the way, is that Stories are simply “a new format” that they they have chosen to adopt.

“Stories are a new documented that’s just beginning to see broad adoption, and we’re excited to bring them to Instagram and help evolve them,” an Instagram spokesperson said in a statement to socialoutwork.Over the years we’ve been really successful at bringing upcoming new formats to Instagram like video, messaging with Direct, and Boomerang.”

Facebook, of course, has tried many times (without success) to copy or imitate Snapchat in some way — both through new functioning apps and through features within its own apps.

Snapchat apart, Instagram appears to be hoping Stories will increase attachment and motivate users to post more often. In a blog post Tuesday, the company notes that though not every moment may be worthy of your main feed, they may still have a place on Instagram.

“Instagram has always been a place to share the moments you want to remember. Now you can share your highlights and everything in between, too.”

Whether  will like the feature, though, is different matter. Both the introduction of the algorithmic feed and the app’s recent reconstructed, sparked almost instantly protests from users.

Bad News Trainers: Pokemon Go plus wristband will reach in September, not July,

Pokemon Go plus wristband

Nintendo says: The Pokémon Go Plus accompanying — a wristband that will awake you to the presence of the little annoying creatures, among other things — will be out two months later than originally announced, the company said in a tweet on twitter.

While Nintendo pointed out that the original launch was planned for the “end of July 2016,” it did not specify what time in September,2016 the device will be launched.

This is possibly, why Nintendo recently made clear that the financial impact of Pokémon Go’s exceptional success will be limited: It doesn’t make the game, it only partially owns the intellectual property rights(IPR’s) for the Pokémon franchise, and the only real Pokémon Go-related product it’s making will come noticeable later than expected. Nintendo’s stock price drop or fall after Monday’s announcement. And it’s stayed at roughly the same value since then.

Pokémon Go has been overwhelming the top apps charts since its release in early July, but interest in the game has delicately waned from the first couple of days. The ideal time for the launch of Pokémon Go Plus would have been 3 weeks ago. Nintendo now has no choice but to expectation a September launch doesn’t prove to be too late.

Pokémon Go Plus is a bracelet or wristband that connects with your phone via Bluetooth and alerts you to nearby Pokémon and PokéStops, hopefully saving your phone’s battery. It helps trainers to encounter pokemons  accurate on target and faster than before.  Even better, if you’ve caught a Pokémon before, you’ll be able to catch it again by simply pressing the button on the wristband instead of throwing a virtual Pokéballs at it on your phone every time.
